R.I.P. Eyedea
Musical genius Eyedea passed away earlier this week at the young age of 28. Most famous for his freestyle abilities and wining the Scribble jab at 18, Eyedea as a musician, in the true sense of the word, reached a level that I think most people will never understand. As a solo artist his entirely self-produced album the Many Faces of Oliver Hart came out before he was twenty years old and is a hip-hop masterpiece. Not everyone likes the music, his style, his flow or what have you, but the power of his words is something no one can ever question. As one-half of Eyedea and Abilities, his group also broke new ground in hip-hop by combining top notch production and turntablism with heavy subject matter and a flow to match. Not to mention his live performances, other musical projects, and his influence on the Minnesota hip-hop scene and the Rhymesayers crew. A true talent the world will miss, rest in peace Eyedea.

You might have heard of the Dead Sea,between Israel and Jordan, commonly believed to be the saltiest lake on earth with over 32% salinity. Well it is in fact not the saltiest place on earth, there are three more saltier places, two are in Antarctica and one is in Lake Assal ‘“ Djibouti, Africa. Gerald Norman would be disappointed because he is often called the Dead Sea, Salty-G, Salt-G the 7-0-Seven Salt Mine and who knows what else, i think he even waxes ledges with bricks of salt. His cousin even beat up Dru Down once. So if you see him around the San Francisco Bay Area, say hi, and if your lucky you’ll get a mean mug. Gerald isn’t always that salty, he just does things on his own terms and does not give a fuck about what anyone else has to say about it, and that’s why he’s a homie. so keep shredin and saltin g!

Tame One, Da Ol’ Jersey bastard, the former Artifacts member, now reppin the Weathermen, this Newark, NJ native has over 25 years in the rap game. He has recorded a PCP themed album with Cage, an album with Del the Funkee Homosapien and his songs have been used in three Animal videos for Butcher’s sections. The most recent of which is an exclusive track he recorded for the new Animal video Cuts. If that doesn’t get you interested then I don’t know……subject matter touches on what them grimy east coast vets already know: substance abuse and PCP addiction, graffiti, dirty Jerz, being broke, triflin hoes, etc.

Legendary singer and hip-hop artist Nate Dogg has suffered two strokes in the past few years, leaving him nearly completely paralyzed and unable to speak. Although his greatest success was in the form of guest spots singing the hook for other artists, he has made a lot of great music as a solo artist, as well as with his cousins Snoop Dogg and Daz Dillinger. This is truly a tragedy, yet he is showing signs of recovery, so keep him in your thoughts and prayers, or at least keep one of his hooks stuck in your head.

If I would have heard this song when is was 13 I probably would have gotten into rap music a few years earlier than I actually did. But it is actually from 2008, from Necro’s brother and former Non-Phixion member Ill Bill. It’s a take on Nas’ song the unauthorized biography of Rakim. Always down for the metal, Ill Bill has a unique approach to rap music that encompasses the spirit of both types of music, but in no resemblance of any kind to rock-rap bullshit crossovers like Limp Bizkit. Ill Bill has recorded songs with Max and Igor Cavalera from Sepultura, members of Bad Brains, Killswitch Engage as well as Raekwon, DJ Premier, Immortal Technique and a long list of heavy hitters from both genres. Check out the next joint, and if you know 80s metal it might bring you back.
BMX riders might recognize a few Necro produced Non-Phixion instrumentals that were used in Ralph Sinisi’s Props interview. They are classic hip-hop songs in their own right, so get hyped and go get you hands on some classic Ill Bill and Non-Phixion material.

How can hip-hop be dead when Wu-Tang is forever? That’s not a question you may have asked yourself lately, but pick this book up and you might change your mind. The Tao of Wu is a new book by the Rza, and unlike The Wu-Tang Manual, this is more of a short collection of stories rather than a history of the Wu-Tang Clan. Rza does tell entertaining stories about his own experiences, including some with fellow Clan members, but his true purpose is to reflect on what has shaped his perspective toward life and put it in a form of knowledge that is available to everyone. Knowledge and wisdom are the first of the 12 jewels, a metaphorical description of the character, material and mental aspects any man must gain in the pursuit of happiness. Rza speaks of these jewels and takes bits and pieces from many religions and spiritual practices, but his message of wisdom, or the manifestation of knowledge, is a simple definition of happiness. You must find it in yourself because nothing and nobody else can make you happy. That is the Tao or the way of truth, which is the practice of the Wu-Tang, which in no way will ever be restricted to martial arts, meditation, rap music, chess or religion. Those are just tools that Rza and many others have found to be conducive to such a goal. The Tao is always there because it is everything, you just might not be listening right, so Rzarect yourself, but don’t call it a comeback because Wu-Tang is forever.

Comic book characters battling rappers? Nerds and hip-hop heads rejoice!
This is from Philadelphia’s Last Emperor who I think is one of the most underrated MCs of all time. Just listen to his verses in the form of other rappers’ styles. This kind of creativity and skill shows real hip-hop is alive and well so don’t hate the player hate the game.
