37 pennies…Written almost 2 years ago.
I turned 35 this year, a couple of weeks ago…As I have done in as many years leading up to this as I remember, I have made a decided effort to ride dirt jumps on or very close to my date of birth. It’s my own personal way of rebelling against the idea of getting older, and the like. This year, the weather and the jumps worked in my favor, and I made a pact with myself, that I would try and get 35 laps in on a particular 8 pack I had been riding this year… One for each of my measured years. I took a cup, and put in near my water, at a spot at the jumps, and put handful of change in my pocket, depositing 1 cent in the cup after each completed lap, so I could keep count. It got close to the end of the day, and I had clearly not been riding a bunch lately, I was inconsistent, and beat tired. I made it to 35, and was stoked, decided 40 was a good round number to aim for, and kept riding. I thought I was up to lap 39, and about to close the deal, and when I started pedaling, I snapped my chain. Magically, I didn’t smash my knee on my stem, or flip over the bars. I just walked out of it, put the chain in the cup, and smiled on my way home. I counted the coins the other day, if I counted right, there were 37….
