For my epic return to Least Most, here’s a few photos of Torche when they came through Philadelphia to support their new split ep with Part Chimp. I only managed to get a few clicks before my flash stopped working and the lens fogged up. Since I haven’t even touched a camera in a year I shouldn’t have expected anything more. The 10% beers probably didn’t help either but at least it was a fun night.

My favorite photo of the night was completely accidental. This dude dove right into me and I must have hit the button just before impact. The same guy also knocked the bass player off the stage. Live action!

Detroit’s Bronze Nazareth dropped his second full length “School for the Blindman” recently and it is one of the best albums I’ve heard all year. Taking his name from the “18 Bronzemen” kung-fu flick and the Nazareth as in the teacher/prophet Jesus of Nazareth. This former Rza protege handles all of the production in a way you would expect a Wu-affiliate would: sparse drums, smooth catchy samples, and an all around great soundtrack to the equally impressive lyrics, teaching blindmen all the lessons they need to know. Joining him on the tracks includes Killah Priest, Rza, Wisemen, Canibus and Masta Killa and Inspectah Deck, go pick it up

One of the best tracks on the album

Connecticut’s claim to rap fame, Apathy has been destroying the mic for quite awhile now. He just released his third official album, Honkey Kong and its his best to date. All of the guest spots kill it, but Apathy is far from being outshined even by heavy hitters like Vinnie Paz, Ill Bill, Xzibit, Slaine and Celph Titled. He brings the early 90s spirit back to the rap game over production from DJ Premier, DJ Muggs and others. Front to back the album is solid, pick it up and support real hiphop

Underground rap heavy weights Ill Bill (Non-Phixion)and Vinnie Paz (Jedi Mind Tricks) just put out a collaborative album and it is fucking brutal. Metal heads might ask how can rappers give their album such a title? Well they have beats that make you want to punch a cop in the face with brass knuckles, they got lyrics that cover the gambit of normal death metal subject matter: Death and violence, Satanism, religion, conspiracys, brutality etc. and they got plenty of metal references and song titles such as “King Diamond” and “Age of Quarrel”

“I drank a quart of blood inside a Buddha chalice/ I took the head off of Kennedy from a roof in Dallas/ I wish that Ron Paul ran again/ If not then Im a have to take the lead like Jeff Hanneman/ ya’ll fallin for the trap again/ 38 leave your fucking body like a mannequin
“This is heavy metal kings, hard body shit sniffin white/ I’m concerned with dying ya’ll concerned with living life/ I’m in the church of Anton while ya’ll kissing Christ/ You ain’t fucking around with Billie or with Vincent Price”

This video is straight satanic

The album title comes from a song these guys recorded a few years ago that TERROR did a remix of peep it

On Saturday December 4th at the Books, Bikes and Beyond thrift store was host to a benefit for the Flying Brick Library. A light, first snow dusted Broad street, but that didn’t stop people from coming out and supporting the Brick.

The Brick is a lending library in the Oregon Hill neighborhood in Richmond, Virginia focussed on radical media. It carries thousands of books, zines, and dvds among other things. The Brick also hosts movie showings, speakers, authors, poets, workshops and meetings.

Richmond’s finest songsmiths donated their time and talents. Julie Carr started the show with a beautiful set and closed it with an a capella number that shook the shelves. Rameysaurus is the name that Flying Brick Ramey Connelly volunteer goes by. She sang her alternately dark, funny, poignant songs to a rapt audience. Josh Small wasted no time in getting started and played his impeccable heart stopping tunes, closing with the gem, “Knife in My Belly.”

After a long year of touring, Tim Barry was set to finally do is
last show of the year. After sitting in with Josh for a couple of songs he came out of the gates raging with a fan’s favorite, “Dog Bumped,” and it was on from there. It was a special treat for the hometown crowd to have Tim’s sister, Caitlin, on the violin. After a few songs Tim brought on an audience member, Maurice Robinson. He talked about his participation in the recent silent protest at VCU in regard to the negro burial ground in Shockoe Bottom. Naturally he played “Prosser’s Gabriel.” After that, he closed the set with a new song about touring and some older favorites.

All in all, the night went off without a hitch and the Flying Brick Library raised a good amount of money for new books thanks to the Books, Bikes and Beyond crew, the performers and all the people who donated.

The flying brick can be contacted via Facebook, MySpace, theflyingbrick@riseup.net, and good ol fashioned snail mail. 506 s. pine st. richmond va 23220

No lie, this was the heaviest show I’ve ever seen and I’ve been to a million metal shows. I’m so psyched that I managed to get so many photos. I guarantee they’re the best photos from that show since I was the only one who snuck flashes onto the stage while battling 1000 other people to stay right in the front. Hope you dig em, I did it all for you. -Derek Adams

Metal and rap are like fire and ice, both powerful forces on their own, but together they make luke warm water. Stinky, stagnant, luke warm water. That hasn’t stopped many from trying to mix the two. Very few, if any, have succeeded. That’s debatable. For this article I had to give a lot of bands a free pass, otherwise nobody could get through it all. So without further ado, here’s my list of the 10 most cringe-worthy tracks in rap-metal. I dare any company to use this list as their next bmx video soundtrack. More realistically, I dare YOU to watch every video on this list without vomiting. Trust me, you don’t want to miss number one…

#10. Vanilla Ice
Vanilla Ice tried to reinvent himself as a metal dude in the late 90′s with hilarious results. Here’s the metal version of Ice Ice Baby dubbed over the original music video. Believe it or not, it’s one of the more listenable tracks on the list.

#9. Downset
I think Downset was one of the bands that emerged after Rage Against The Machine got popular. This song was actually in an ECD video already, so you need to get MCM’s permission if you want to reuse it (this video actually says MCM in the corner too…weird).

#8. Limp Bizkit
Let’s get the obvious out of the way here, these guys are terrible.

#7. Kid Rock
Say what you want about Kid Rock, but he made sweet love to Pamela Anderson in her prime, and you didn’t.

#6. Crazy Town
This isn’t the most “metal” of Crazy Town’s tracks, but it’s probably the worst video. You might know “Shifty” from Dr. Drew’s celebrity rehab on tv. Seems like a fun guy to smoke crack with.

#5. Hed PE.
Thanks to my friend Luke for making me aware of this. Double wow! So gangsta!!

#4. Undead
This is the first song that popped up on Youtube when I typed in “rap metal”. Figures it’s on a Famous Stars and Straps soundtrack. Why do a lot of these guys sound like angrier versions of Eminem? If you haven’t puked yet, this may do it. Get your bucket ready…

#3. Jay-Z and Linkin Park
The rap/rock collaboration thing was invented by Run DMC/Aerosmith in the 80′s, taken to extremes with the Judgement Night Soundtrack in the 90′s, and has only gone downhill since. The top 3 are more recent collabo’s that never should have happened. Yes, it actually gets worse from here.

#2. Wu Tang and System of a Down.
No!! Why?? If you don’t want to lose respect for Wu-Tang, just skip to the next one. This is abysmal. ODB must be rolling in his grave.

#1 Metallica and Ja Rule.
I still can’t believe this song actually happened. Who thought this was a good idea? I got this song stuck in my head for an entire day, “Yeahhhhh, we did it!!!” over and over, haha. It really doesn’t get any worse. Please listen to this because misery loves company. Seriously, this track is an audio train wreck!
WARNING: Once heard this can never be un-heard.
